A few words from Pierre Charette, luthier:
" The alto viol is now being varnished. I used a mold this time to assemble the sides of the tenor viol and like the process much better. As you can see on the photo, the head is progressing well (a young version of Charles II of England who lives on Susie's viol). I'm styling the hair in 18th century style! Next week  I'll start on the soundboard, using wood that's been drying for over 25 years."

A few words about the work in progress fromPierre Charette:

« Here are a few photos of the alto viol taken in August. High humidity this summer was ideal for doing the purfling. There must be close to 6 meters of purfling on the viol! I'm presently working on finishing the surfaces, and once that"s done I will settle the viol in a little case with utlra-violet lamps to give it a nice tan before starting on the varnish. This will give the wood a beautiful golden color. »

And some notes by Pierre on the evolution of the alto viol (March 20, 2009):

"I have completed the sides, assembling them without a mold, a technique current in the 17th century. The scroll is designed after a Barak Norman bass. For the soundboard I am presently working on, I selected my best piece of Dolomite Epicea. I will send more photos in a month to keep you posted on the progress.”

Montreal violin makers Pierre Charrette and Hélène Cossette are making two new instruments for Les Voix humaines : an alto and a tenor viols to match Susie’s exquisite Barak Norman bass viol. Louis Bégin, also from Montreal, will make the bows and we will purchase fitted cases from Valises d’Aluminium Rouillard in Laval.
